it was 50 years ago today that Laika became the 1st living creature to orbit the Earth. She also died within hours after launch.doh
Laika (from Russian: Лайка, a breed of dog, literally: "Barker") was a Russian space dog which became the first recorded living creature from Earth to enter orbit. At one time a stray wandering the streets of Moscow, she was selected from an animal shelter. Originally named Kudryavka (Russian: кудрявка), she was renamed Laika after her breed type. After undergoing training with two other dogs, she was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 and was launched into space on 3 November 1957.
Laika died a few hours after launch from stress and overheating, probably due to a malfunction in the thermal control system. The true cause of her death was not made public until decades after the flight. Some former Soviet scientists have since expressed regret that Laika was allowed to die.
Although Laika did not survive the trip, the experiment proved that a living passenger could survive being launched into orbit and endure weightlessness. It paved the way for human spaceflight and provided scientists with some of the first data on how living organisms react to spaceflight environments.
Blin it's a bunch of bullcrap when animals are used liked this inhumanely in the name of "science":gr:
more info on Laika can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika
Dedicated in the memory of space's 1st pioneer, Laika

no, we should explore because it's our choice, not because we were rounded up out of the street

i too think its cruel to send an animal against its will into space or used for scientific testing etc. humans have a choice, but animals don't and are exploited and tortured in many cases :(

To keep this controversial ! When am i not? The use of animals throughout history has led to some of the greatest scientific breakthroughs and brought huge benefits to both Man and animals.
Of course the use of animals for no reason and simply to cause pain is unacceptable, yet, most of us will eat animals which have been kept in inhumane conditions, there lives short and brutal so that we can enjoy meat, leather and other products. We then allow animals to be brutalised and dehomed because we need lumber, or minerals to keep us in the way we hope to live.
We kill pests because they invade our homes and ar'nt cute and cuddly.
Animal cruelty is always subjective and based on the times we live in.
Which is better a dog (likely to have been killed "humanely" as a stray within a short period or a cosmonaut with family and friends (even if he knew it was a risk, a risk he was willing to take what about the people around him who did not make that choice).
In conclusion whenever possible we should use models first, test tubes second animals doggy when needed then the brave humans who take risks others of us would not playboyre

The first female cosmonaut was also Russian I believe, she lost control of her orbiter and the mission had to be scrapped....her orbiter was brought down manually..and she spent the next several years in a mental institution..
I only wish I could remember her name.....BLIN :)

To be a cosmonaut you have to be on a Russian flight the first female Cosmonaut was Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, as far as I can see there was no problem with the mission and she orbited the earth 48 times. On her return she was awarded the medal of honour and represented the USSR as it was at the united nations being awarded the golden metal of honour by them. She also married another Cosmonaut and had a a baby daughter ......toast

I dont think the media in the US told me the truth....bastards....
The story I heard was that she put herself into wild spin..and totally lost it
mentally...to the point that controllers on the ground had to manually
over-ride her and conduct the re-entry sequence themselves....
I saw a picture in the news before work yesterday...that clearly showed one of the Pakistani police officers kicking some poor bastard in the nuts..
however....when I came home from work.....I searched thru 173 pictures ....but that particular picture was no where to be found.....
And that is blatant media censorship...and to me thats BULL- SHIT...
Dont show harsh realities...poeple might get upset......
Perhaps it`s time to be upset, about the harsh realities created by our own
existance on this planet, endeavor to persevere...but to what end ?
I try to be good to everyone..and teach people that the media is regulated and censored in all countries...Only here, can we speak of this...
freely....perhaps.... I`m the biggest BEGEMOT on the whole planet..
Ask me no questions...I`ll tell you no lies....:beer

the american media are total whores to be honest. australia is one of their closest allies along with the UK of recent times, and still we are lied to every day.
the american people are also lied to every day. i don't believe a word the american media or government has to say about anything anymore. american people, for the most part, are amazing people like anyone else in other parts of the world, but america's government, corporate and military persona's are something to be very wary of and something to avoid if possible.
if you're not a red-blooded christian american, you're fair game, and liable as a terrorist or "undesirable"...
such a shame, as so many amazing and beautiful people exist regardless of such predispositions, no matter their country of origin or religious belief.
