I noticed today that have been at least 20 new people (and 3 spammers) registered on forum today and also there now seems to be around 50 looking at the forum at any one time

used to be only around 5-10 looking at forum at any one time

geode for every one of those you posted, another 2 or 3 spams are usually posted earlier in the day that I deleted...

I just don't catch the ones you post because those pop up while I am at work.

may be Diz needs to band the IP address that is duplicated so much. It may be a firewall address to a larger organization, but I'd rather error on the anti-spam side.

Usually banning anything to do with IP is just a wild goose chase.

Generally I see flurries of activity when previous security fixes are broken on popular boards (IPB/pHp etc.) The key is always to update software.

Also, I am fairly sure the 'registering' status is pre-activation and the majority fall at this hurdle and therefore no spam. Certainly I have seen countless 'latest/newest registered user...' on other forums that are clearly suspicious but with non of the expected posts.

I still think the neatest solution is the hack that prevents a user from placing a link in their first post or rather that it is moved to moderation queue.
